“Charm” City

While it was most recently made famous by the likes of Marlo Stansfield, Stringer Bell, Omar and Snoop of the hit HBO series, The Wire, Baltimore, MD or (“Charm City” as it is affectionately referred to by locals), is so much more than that, “Hon.” Baltimore was also called home by the likes of Thurgood Marshall, Frederick Douglass, Billie Holiday and Edgar Allen Poe to name a few of its more famous former residents.

As as City, Baltimore has faced more than its fair share of trials and tribulations. It was founded in 1729 as a major U.S. seaport with the majority of its industry in the city’s early years coming from manufacturing and shipping. The shift from an industrialized to a knowledge-based economy saw the demise of the city’s largest, employer Bethlehem Steel, and led to the rise of the city’s current largest employer Johns Hopkins University.

But despite these struggles, Baltimore City is on the rise. Situated 40 miles north of Washington DC and within 2 1/2 hours commute from Philadelphia and 3 hours to New York City, Baltimore has positioned itself as a service-sector oriented city with a thriving economy backed by its standing as the East Coast corridor biotechnology hub. The city is undergoing a renaissance and revitalization effort of massive proportions. In conjunction with Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore is engaged in an 800 million to 1 billion dollar redevelopment project on Baltimore’s East side (Johns Hopkins Biotech Park), while the University of Maryland at Baltimore is simultaneously developing its Biopark on Baltimore’s West side with a capital investment of 135 million.

Taken together, today's Baltimore is a city that provides the urban appeal of culture, university life, the arts and entertainment, high quality healthcare, and a strong economic base. Baltimore truly has all the amenities of city living with the affordability of lower housing and living expenses, reasonable commutes and a true sense of community.
